Underserved Communities
Underserved Communities
Lake Balboa Park is situated in Los Angeles City Council District 6. In 2020, the district was 67% Latino, 18.4% White, 10% Asian and 3.2% Black. The median household income was $46,767 and 22% of residents lived in poverty.
We believe it’s important for BIPOC communities to have a greater voice in conservation actions, programs and policies. A productive way to achieve this is to encourage the young, including from under-served communities of color, to become inspired and empowered to tackle challenges to their future through the hands-on learning opportunities described on the Home Page.
Council District 6 is also home to the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians who are represented on our Executive Committee by Tataviam and Chumash Elder, Alan Salazar and Tribal Member and co-nursery manager for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, Julia Samaneigo. Together with Indigenous Chef and Professor, Dr Claudia Serrato, they lead key elements of our Lake Balboa Park Project.
Another important objective is a kiosk located in the civic plaza selling subsidized fresh produce from the kitchen and foraging gardens, and inexpensive take-out meals from the Native American restaurant.
